This, as with other family reports, is a compilation of data
learned so far about descendants of Joseph Cartwright, believed to have
been born in 1784 in North Carolina. Proceed with caution,
as this is a work in progress and the information should be personally
verified by the reader.
We have collected considerable information on this Cartwright line,
going as far back as the 15th Century in England, but lacking personal
and positive verification of much of this information, hesitate to
publish it until more proof is gathered.
Great appreciation is due several other Cartwright researchers and
relatives, who have provided much information, photos, and
encouragement, beginning with my late uncle, the Rev. M. Carl
Cartwright, whose research provided the initial base for my own
work. Also, I appreciate information provided by many cousins,
who are too numerous to name here but who are shown in the lists of
sources. Special thanks to a number of cousins and connections
such as Patti Hart, Mike Cartwright, Betty Cain, Bettye L. Pain, Betty
Frain, and the late Carolyn Drost, and to the Rev. Robert Z. Carlisle
II, Martha Louise Cartwright Swezey, and Pauline O'Hara Stone, who have
provided many wonderful new photos and other bits of information.
More recent contributors have been several descendants of Floy
Cartwright Rooks, such as her daughter, Martha and her family, and
Floy's granddaughter, Becky Rooks. In fact, the good will and
friendship of many cousins just too numerous to mention here is an
important and motivating factor to keep this database growing in both
information and accuracy!
As with my other family databases, persons who are still living (or
thought possibly to be still living) are excluded from the Index, and
appear on family cards only as "Private."
If you see information about your own family which you know to be
either incorrect or incomplete, or if you have information to add that
doesn't even appear at all here, particularly official records to
verify information, I would appreciate knowing about it. In the
absence of actual data, many birth dates have been estimated purely for
purposes of sorting, and to give a rough time period to research in
future data gathering efforts. Again, this is a work in progress!
